“I really enjoyed Maarten’s Taichi class sessions. Following his movements, clear instructions, and explanations, he felt natural and fluid. Maarten would break the form’s movements into their underlying principles and manageable steps. Part of the class involved learning to relax one’s body and mind. This helped enable me to mimic the Taichi movements naturally and allowed me to learn more easily.“

FAQs

What are the benefits of learning Tai Chi at your school compared to others?

At my school, I focus on the essence of Tai Chi—the core principles like the eight energies—without sticking strictly to one style. I teach both Chen and Yang-style Tai Chi. Students focus first on learning very short forms, unlike other schools that teach long and complicated forms from the start. My approach is about making Tai Chi your own, helping you develop a deep, adaptable understanding that suits your personal journey, whether you’re just starting out or have been practicing for years.

Do I need any prior experience to start Tai Chi?

No prior experience is needed to start Tai Chi. Our classes are designed to be welcoming and accessible to everyone, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience. We’ll guide you step by step, making sure you feel comfortable and confident as you learn. It’s all about starting where you are and enjoying the journey!

How often should I practice Tai Chi to see the benefits? How long does it take to learn Tai Chi?

To start feeling the benefits of Tai Chi, try to practice 2-3 times a week. Even short, daily sessions can make a big difference in your balance, flexibility, and mindfulness. Learning Tai Chi is a personal journey—you might feel comfortable with the basics after a few weeks, but the deeper benefits will continue to grow with regular practice.

Can I schedule a trial class before committing to a membership?

Yes, you can definitely schedule a trial class with us! We don’t require a membership—our classes are paid on a monthly basis, so you can join and continue at your own pace. We’d love to have you come and experience a class before making any commitment.

Are there online classes available for those unable to attend in person?

While I don’t offer regular online classes, private online sessions are available for those who can’t attend in person.

What can I expect during a typical Tai Chi class?

In a typical group class, we begin by focusing on the basics—meditation, qigong, stretching, and mabu (horse stance). Then, we practice the eight energies, Tai Chi forms, and pushing hands. It’s balanced to help you build a strong foundation while exploring deeper aspects of Tai Chi.

There are no typical private classes as they are adapted to student’s needs and interests.

Is Tai Chi suitable for all ages and fitness levels?

Absolutely! Tai Chi is perfect for all ages and fitness levels. The movements are gentle and can be easily adjusted to fit your personal needs, so whether you're new to exercise or have been active for years, you’ll find it accessible and rewarding. It’s a wonderful way to improve your balance, flexibility, and relaxation, all while enjoying a peaceful and supportive environment.

What should I wear to my first Tai Chi class?

For your first Tai Chi class, it's best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Lightweight, flat-soled shoes are ideal for maintaining balance and ease of movement. The key is to feel relaxed and unrestricted so you can fully

What styles of Tai Chi do you teach, and how do they differ?

I teach both Chen and Yang-style Tai Chi, blending their strengths to help you create a practice that resonates with you. Chen style features dynamic, spiraling movements, while Yang emphasizes slow, graceful motions. However, my main focus is on forms based on the 8 energies and 5 stepping, which are style-independent, allowing you to develop a personalized Tai Chi practice.

Where are the classes held, and is there parking available nearby?

Classes are at the Yoga Sadhaka studio on Eulerstrasse 41 in Basel. Parking is limited in the center of Basel. But there’s great public transport with bus and tram stops right in front of the building.
